Over this past weekend there has been a fair bit of discussion about watermarking in Cedega 4.0.1. We appreciate everyone's feedback and passionate discussion . We can confirm that Cedega 4.0.1 included some basic watermarking. While we tested Cedega 4.0.1 extensively, both internally and with our beta team, we did not anticipate the MD5 sum issue for our Gentoo users, and we regret any inconvenience that this may have caused.
The objective behind the watermarking was to deal with some peer-to-peer piracy issues that we've been seeing over the past several months; no personal information was inserted or obtained through the watermarking. While we agree that no anti-piracy mechanism is foolproof, the simple addition of watermarking has already helped us identify a long-time culprit whose activities resulted in thousands of copies of the subscriber-only binary packages being illegally distributed. This person has been offering pirated copies of the packages within hours of our releases, hurting everyone who has contributed to the development of Cedega.
Some of you have asked why we didn't publicly mention the watermarking before. Doing so would defeat the purpose of the watermarking by alerting the perpetrators. By creating a benign system to track downloads, the watermarking feature was meant to be relatively transparent and non-intrusive - only being active on a handful of the downloads - and for the most part it was.
We hope that our subscribers recognize that we are trying to protect their interests. The revenue lost to this kind of copyright infringement could equal a significantly larger development team for TransGaming. With more developers, we would have the ability to issue more releases, support more games, and broaden the network of game developers and publishers we closely work with to bring games to Linux. Furthermore, the significant amount of piracy we're experiencing confirms the suspicions of some software publishers that Linux users don't like to pay for content - a misconception that can have negative implications for the Linux gaming community as a whole, over the long term.
We have suspended the watermarking feature for now and Gentoo users no longer need to be concerned with work-arounds. We appreciate all of the comments both here and elsewhere on the issues. We review these comments carefully, and they will most certainly influence our decisions in the future. This feedback will be very valuable as we continue to think about ways in which we can limit illegal redistribution in the long term, without interfering in any tangible way with legitimate usage.
