а это по спекам чипсета нельзя узнать?

Зависит от производителя ноута. В спеках моего ноута написано про 4 Гига, реально хавает только 2.

В спеках чипсета, то есть

ThinkPad Z61M
Maximum Memory 3072 MB
Memory Slots 2 Slots
Base Memory 512 MB (removable)

Although it is physically possible to install more memory, the system will only recognize 3072 MB maximum.

У меня чипсет на настольном поддерживает 2, но плата их видит только если у них определённая частота, иначе видит только 1.

R60 -- 4 гига тянет.

4 гига, видит 3110968, остальное можно отдать видяхе или подключить через MTTD... (thinkpad R60)

но у меня еще проц старенький: core duo... Думаю воткнуть потом core 2 duo или квадру, чтоб все видело, но пока вломак и так хватает.

Так ведь старые интелы не AMD, контроллер памяти у них внешний так что заменой проца это не решить.

Алсо включена ли в ядре поддерка 64 Gb RAM и PAE и сколько памяти видит бивис.
