This DFB backend for the GTK+ http://www.gtk.org library allows GTK applications to run on top of DirectFB, without having an X11 server running: while the DFB backend, as it's meant for embedded use, hasn't all the features the X11 backend does, it's powerful and stable enough to run complex GTK applications such as the GIMP.
