Доброго времени.

Неожиданно отказался работать USB HDD (WD).

В dmesg при подключении или попытке использовать fdisk:

Подскажите, какие ещё шаги предпринять для определения проблемы?

Обычно у usb-дисков проблемы с питанием. Сейчас материнка 5 В не потребляет, всё от 12 В, поэтому если у БП испортились 5 В, то это вылезет на USB-устройствах.

А так можно попробовать запустить SMART self-test и можно понаблюдать, растёт ли Power_Cycle_Count при подобных сообщенияз, если винт не выдёргивать из usb, а просто вызывать fdisk.

Забить нулями, проверить снова. Данные восстановить из бекапа. Диск либо сыпется либо питалово плохое.

Посмотри на плату контроллера на диске - если есть окисления, то открути контроллер с диска и почисти ластиком контактные площадки, к которым подключается разъем на корпусе диска.

Western Digital - ставит всяку поибень в USB HDD.
Реши проблему изначально и арийско верно - установкой Toshiba/HGST/Hitachi USB HDD.
Японцы из страны аниме - таки не разучились делать адекватные HDD.

зеленая какашка, хранимая в этой коробке, дохнет. вполне предсказуемо.

делать посекторную копию через ddrescue (если там еще есть что копировать), из копии пытаться вытягивать данные.
