Но оно же работает, что мешает не дергать dhcp и не терять IP адрес? Что можно сделать?

dhcp тут вряд ли как-то связан. Можно проверить голым wpa_supplicant (или просто поменять настройки адреса в networkmanager / ...), но по-хорошему надо и траффик погонять.

И да, шифрования вроде нет, но на всякий случай уточню, проверять лучше без него.

Что можно сделать?

Переставить роутер поближе, и/или заменить ему родные 2 dBi антенки на 5 dBi или 8 dBi
