Драйвера nvidia 9755 версии, дистриб Slackware 11.0, ядро 2.6.20-ck1.
В чем может быть проблема? Где-то в инете видел, что дрова должны
быть скомпилены с поддержкой linux. Это как? Я перекомпилял модуль
ядра с поддержкой nptl, но это не помогло.

В настройках xorg.conf параметры видюхи умолчальные (как делал сам 
инсталлятор). По крайней мере в xorg.conf я ничего не правил.
Что такое композитные менеджеры и что значит "откуда
запускаешь"? Запускаю от непривилегированного пользователя локально,
то есть с этой же машины, на которой все установлено.
Сейчас этой машины у меня под рукой нет и это все, что
я могу пока сказать. Сейчас уже ухожу и смогу ответить только завтра
утром.

Все заработало. :)
Дело было в том, что у меня был выставлен цвет 16 бит, а для doom3
надо 24. Выставил 24 и все пошло.
Спасибо всем, кто пытался помочь.
